How to Use ChatGPT (Without Getting Overwhelmed)

So, you signed up for ChatGPT… now what?

If you’ve ever opened the chat window and stared at the blinking cursor wondering, “What am I supposed to do with this?” you’re not alone.

This guide will walk you through exactly how to use ChatGPT, from signing up to prompting it like a pro. I’ll also show you how to get way better results than most people using it.

Step 1: Set Up Your Account

Go to chat.openai.com and sign up using your email or Google account.

Yes, you’ll need to verify your phone number (just once) to prove you’re not a robot (ironic, I know)

Step 2: Understand the Layout

Once you’re in, here’s what you’ll see:

  • Sidebar on the left: where your previous chats show up

  • Chat window in the center: where the magic happens

  • Textbox at the bottom: where you type your questions or prompts

If you’ve upgraded to ChatGPT Plus, you’ll also see Projects (think folders for your chats and uploads) and access to custom GPTs.

Step 3: Type Something... Literally Anything

You can start simple. I typed:

“What are some creative dinner ideas using chicken and broccoli?”

ChatGPT replied with full-on recipe inspo (and yes, one included pizza).
Then I said:

“Make it taste more like pizza.”

It replied with a cheesy casserole idea, stuffed peppers, and even turned one of them into a printable recipe card. Honestly? Not mad.

Step 4: Try Follow-Up Commands

Once you get an answer, you can:

  • Ask follow-up questions

  • Say “Make it shorter/funnier/more professional”

  • Click Regenerate Response to get a different version

  • Hit Stop Generating if it’s going off the rails

You can also scroll back up to reference earlier parts of the convo. ChatGPT keeps the whole thread in context.

Step 5: Use Custom Instructions (Most People Skip This)

This is a pro-level trick that barely anyone uses:

Click your name or profile in the corner and go to Custom Instructions.

Tell ChatGPT:

  • What to know about you

  • How you want it to respond

Examples:

“I’m a beginner. Explain everything like I’m five.”
“Use a friendly, casual tone. Add a joke if it makes sense.”

This changes everything about how it replies to you, and makes it way more personal.

Step 6: Build a Voice It Can Recognize

Want ChatGPT to actually sound like you?

That’s where Brand Voice GPT comes in. I built it to ask the exact right questions and give you a personalized voice guide in minutes.

You can then paste that into future chats and say:

“Write this post in my voice.”
“Make this sound like me, using my tone.”

Extra: Real-Life Use Cases

Here are some ways I actually use ChatGPT day to day:

  • Organizing years of messy notes into a clean framework

  • Brainstorming titles for YouTube videos

  • Drafting Instagram captions

  • Helping me write proposals while I walk my dog

  • Critiquing my work in my own tone of voice

  • Summarizing legal documents (while I’m in a board meeting )

  • Making jokes about Nevada education policy. Don’t ask. (actually just watch this part of the video 😆)

TLDR;

ChatGPT isn’t just “ask it to write a blog post” and call it a day.

It’s a tool. And the better you get at prompting it, the better it gets at helping you.

So experiment. Talk to it like a friend. And if you want to take it even further, like training it to write like you, think like you, or build content from your ideas… you can check out the >> AI Power-Up Kit here <<
